An encrusted deposit, especially on a submerged object. Sometimes fouling and scaling are distinguished and the former is more related to the adhesion of particles or bacteria to a surface and the latter to insoluble matter covering the entire surface by direct deposition from solution. In both cases the surface properties are important and for fouling also the colloidal stability of particles.
